Segways and ALLY Chairs

Segs4Vets provides Universally Designed Mobility Devices (Segways and ALLY Chair adapted Segways) to disabled veterans, active duty members of the United States military, and first responders who sustained severe injuries or illnesses that resulted in permanent disability while serving the United States of America. These unique tools are solving many of the mobility issues facing our disabled veterans in a manner which is both psychologically uplifting and physically beneficial.

A Segway or ALLY Chair can ensure a disabled veteran can regain his independence and once again become an active participant in his own life. As the circumstances and needs of our recipients change and evolve, our program continues to support and adapt by providing support services and an open line of communication with recipients and their families.

The impact of the Segs4Vets program extends far beyond our recipients—drastically improving the quality of lives of the loved ones who care for them—spouses, children, parents, caregivers, and friends. And the benefits of Universally Designed Mobility Devices (ALLY Chairs and Segways) are not just physical: our unique tools inspire hope and empower veterans with disabilities to regain control over their lives.

What is a SEGWAY?

The Segway is a device that is solving many of the mobility issues facing our disabled veterans in a manner which is both psychologically uplifting and physically beneficial. Thousands of people today are using Segways in precisely the same places and conditions as those using wheelchairs, in addition to those places which are inaccessible for wheelchairs. The Segway is a Universally Designed technology that was not developed for use by the disabled, but has proven over the last 12 years to be a life-changing tool for those with mobility disabilities. The Segway is recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act Title III as an Other Power Driven Mobility Device.

Training and Selection

The Segs4Vets application process takes an individualized, personal approach to selecting our recipients. For more information or to apply to receive a Segway or ALLY Chair click here

Segs4Vets provides assessment, training, device selection and customization of ALLY Chair adapted Segways and Segways to meet the individual needs of the new recipients. The Segs4Vets program sends a trainer to a recipient’s hometown to train them on a Segway or ALLY Chair in their own environment if the recipient is not close to the St. Louis or San Antonio area. This has proven to be a cost-effective way to train recipients whose travel expenses may be costly.
